Once again, Topalov lost. He and Vallejo engaged in one of the sharpest and most complicated lines in chess. He fought very hard but came out at the short end of the stick.
Radjabov played solidly against Bacrot and fully took advantage of his space advantage and comfortable position for a win.
Ivanchuk thoroughly trashed Svidler in a wild game where neither side castled. Svidler only lasted 25 moves.
Leko effortlessly drew against Aronian with the Black pieces to maintain the lead.
After 6 round, the standings are:
1. 4.5 GM Peter Leko (Hungary 2740)
2-3. 3.5 GM Levon Aronian (Armenia 2752), GM Peter Svidler (Russia 2765)
4-5. 3.0 GM Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine 2729), GM Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan 2700)
6. 2.5 GM Francisco Vallejo Pons (Spain 2650)
7-8. 2.0 GM Etienne Bacrot (France 2717), GM Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria 2801)
Vishy Anand is going to be the first new ratings numero uno in 21 years! Topalov has just handed the top rating to him.
Eli
I think its a shame that Topalov has done so poorly in this tournament. After reaching over 2800 and beating former World Champion Kasparov he has just imploded. Peter Leko is playing great with a full point lead. Radjabov is getting some good experience. Why didnt Judith and Vishy participate in this tourny Susan?

I am so lucky to be able to watch these games live on the internet. the Vallejo Pons – Topalov game was exciting. many Spanish people were online commenting and cheering. It was a fun time for everyone except Topalov.
I have been an Anand fan for years. I really believe he deserves to be the World Champion. He has been at the top of the chess world for so many years. it has only been Kasparov who has kept the world title just inches away.
Susan Polgar is the only one who has given the reason for Topalov’s problem. he is too busy with too many other activities. I suspect his manager Danilov is not doing the right thing for Topalov. Danilov get a percentage of the income but he is booking too much activity for Topalov.
Topalov should have accepted the $1.4 million match with Kramnik. he probably knows that now. poor Topalov is not getting the correct advice from those he pays to give him advice.
It was good to see Vallejo Pons win the game. It should be great for his confidence. I hope to see him now rise up to play better chess in all his games. I hope this is a jumping off point for him to bigger and better chess. He certainly has worked hard for many years on chess and finally has a great game. this is wonderful.
Topalov busy? So was Garry.
Brief: Topa and Vishy together might make a Garry. Topa has the aggression and the will to work, and Anand has the genius. Topa couldn’t withstand the attacks on the King of the Hill in Linares. One thing could give either Topa or Anand (or Aronian!?) a WC type consistency : an investment in a great research staff, such as benefitted Garry.
Personalities : Topa might be vulnerable to surprises, as was Karpov. Anand might sometimes feel compassion for his opponents. Leko spent a lot of time at the beginning of his game vs. Arnonian in Linares – a good way to deal with a potential surprise.
Topa can come back. He has before. Vishy wisely sat out Linares. Easier to watch Topa self-destruct from overexposure – and Vishy will be ready to claim the championship if he works hard now, knowing that it could be his.
