Chess world champions meet in Tashkent

2004 world chess champion Rustam Kasymjanov (Uzbekistan) and current world champion Viswanathan Anand (India) held a friendly match in Tashkent on 27 March.

The event was organized by the Ministry for Culture and Sports of Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan Chess Federation, and the Fund “Forum of Culture and Arts of Uzbekistan” with the purpose of popularization of chess in the country.

“Today’s friendly has brought together two outstanding world champions – Rustam Kasymjanov and Viswanathan Anand,” president of the World Chess Federation Kisran Ilyumzhinov said.

“Uzbekistan is known in the world with its chess traditions. It is great that Uzbekistan pays huge attention to development of children’s sport, including chess,” he added.

The rapid chess friendly match consisted of four parties and ended with the victory of Viswanathan Anand – 3.5-0.5.

On 28 March Viswanathan Anand and on 29 March Rustam Kasymjanov will hold a training seminar for young chess players of Uzbekistan.
