It seems to hinge on the fact if the king stops the a pawn from promoting then promoting the h-pawn will come with check saving a tempo…
1. a6! Bc5 (… Kc7 2. a7 Kb7 3. a8=Q+ Kxa8 4. h7 Ba3 5. h8=Q+) 2. Ke5! Kc7 3. a7 Bxa7 4. h7
No, I can’t see yet. Which book was it from? I want to put it on my “black list”.
The book cannot be wrong, Susan! The author, whoever she is, is wrong!
By the way, you were 3-time winner of the Chess Journalists of America Award for Best Magazine Column (2003) & Best Endgame Analysis (2003-2004), right? Could you please post one or two of these beautiful award – winning endgame analysis here?
Dear Susan,
Would you please open a blog for Chess Parents, as myself, only. I would like there to ask simple questions, if you would find the free time to answer.
Thank you.
Ooops, too bad. I didn’t get it. I calculated and calculated, but didn’t think of the fact that white could do a7-a8=Q+, king takes, and then h7-h8=Q+ with check, so black could not play i.e. Bb2+. I guess that was missed by somebody before me too..
the 1.a6! … 2. Ke5 solution given by ANONYM (it’s a pity that he / she does not have a “real” name!) is completely convincing to me!
(my initial idea was 1.h7 bc5 2.ke5 – but black can move 1… ba3 instead – and keep the draw)
– nothing more to add – have a nice sunday – yours Vohaul
(i’ll watch that m-tel live coverage on the tournament side – by the way, very nice 3d-red and white pieces on red and white squares – i’m missing a little “bulgarian” green in between – and because i’m a Peter Svidler fan – sure enough i like his accompanying commentaries more than his “dry” chess style – i’ll keep my fingers crossed for him)
From elsewhere:
“(Sofia, May 13, 2006) Pirates broadcast the super chess tournament M-Tel Masters in internet. The biggest game server in the world ICC (www.chessclub.com) announces the live broadcast of the moves from the games in the tournament. The transmission is being done by using signal from the official web site of M-Tel Masters 2006 – http://www.mtelmasters06.com, which is violation of the copyrights of the organizes of the competition. The service offered by ICC is accessible for all club members, who pay membership fee. Membership is free for GMs.
According to the copyright laws the access to the games on the tournament web site is free only after the end of each game when the files with the moves can be downloaded by any internet user.
All games from the super chess tournament M-Tel Masters are broadcasted live and free in internet on the official web site of the competition. Till the end of Round 2, that ended late last night, there are over 330 000 visits of the web site. Due to the rest days today and tomorrow even bigger interest is expected from all over the world.”
“ANONYM (it’s a pity that he / she does not have a “real” name!)”
Rarely anyone uses their real name on the Internet, Vohaul.
Using Anonymous is perfectly legal, as Susan’s blog endorses such an option freely. It is of same value as the real name, with the disadvantage that one can post opinions, which otherwise, using real name, might never write, or might not even think it. It’s like Dr.Jekyl and Mr. Hyde.
ah – i understand – that is the reason why ICC is an offical sponsor of m-tel tournament like – e.g.
http://www.bulstradlife.bg/perl-bin/index.pl
believe it or not – watching the games – is for free – and it is fully sponsored – but not by ICC …
(did you all notice meter and rhymes written between these lines)
a spamfighter even in blogs – Vohaul
@ANONYM – of course u are right, but – lot’s of people use this anonym-acronym –
my REAL NAME is – of course – not VOHAUL – but in boards or blogs around the world – i am KNOWN as VOHAUL – and all blogs or postings or something else – written by ME around the web – i use to sign with my “internet” – “real” – name – namely: VOHAUL
why do i such silly things?
maybe because i have a problem with my identity, maybe i’m craving for recognition, maybe i am ill …
on the other hand – my mishaps are mine – just as well as my successes – and i am a single, distinctive person – and i am selfconfident …
– and – by the way – only by knowing someones name, communication is possible – otherwise we would talk in an anonym environment, should we?
– maybe humans would not have developed warfare if there would have been the possibility to recognize AND accept each other as INDIVIDUALS
GENS UNA SUMMUS – sincerly, your Vohaul
GENS UNA SUMUS to you as well! May you keep blogging as long as this blog exists.
“only by knowing someones name, communication is possible – otherwise we would talk in an anonym environment, should we?”
Exactly this is why I dislike the blog software, for allowing anonymouses to post as split personalities.
I saw it too but I have to repeat my feeling when i found it ….. a6 is a “beautiful” chess move. I love end game clevers like this one.
@dear anonym – use woltalab software – and change the blog to a board and keep your blog as a reel blog – without comments – simply a suggestion …
sincerly yours, Vohaul (NOI)
PS: NOI = no identity problem
I find the anonymous to be very annoying. I would like to see people take a handle.
handle is a chosen name.
that way when there are 10 anon postings we know if it is the same one person or 10 diff people. there are other advantages.
the person can still use an anon handle like “chess player” for a handle.
it makes for more fun in posting if people can talk to each other.
try this
http://www.chessninja.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=6
and hopefully you will see the advantages. everyone is still pretty much anonymous if they want to be. or public if they want to be.
I don’t understand this complaint about disclosing moves from the MTel games. Chess moves cannot be copyrighted. The tournament is a sporting event and if someone makes a move like Bishop to e6, reporting that fact is just a news report. Maybe there is some agreement between the organizers and the spectators (including ICC members) that nobody should report the moves til the tournament is over, so reporting early breaches the agreement. But that’s not a copyright infringement, it’s a different type of dispute and not one I’m convinced makes sense.
It’s like watching a basketball game on cable TV, and telling people on the phone when someone has scored a basket so they don’t have to subscribe to cable. Maybe the cable TV company gets mad because they want everyone to subscribe, but there’s no copyright issue.
Hopefully, we are mature and worldly enough as a species to discuss chess ideas based solely upon their merit alone.
An anonymous environment unencumbered by either the pompousness of flaunting one’s accomplishments or by browbeating others with one’s reputation.
This cannot be won by White. This is either a Draw or a Stalemate any way you look at it.
OOPS!! I stand corrected. 1.) a6! does indeed do the trick.
Interesting argument about the whole anonomys thing but that solution was mine lol… tinky on ICC… nice to meet you all.. too lazy to make an account though 🙂
