Black wins …ke5.
If I were black I would play
Ke5 and after Kxh4, Kf4! and see what happens. Seems forced at least up to that point.
After Kf4 white King moves to h4 or h3 (both ugly choices) and then I would move f5. White seems in trouble 🙂
Although it appears that white will be up material after its next move no matter what black does.(2.Kxh4)
A review of the board shows that it may be white who should consider resigning.
Black is better due to its advanced pawns and better king.
The black pawn on c4 restrains whites’ b and c pawns. Black’s b pawn stops white’s pawn on the a file.
In fact after 1…Ke5, black will have its king in front of the only past pawn currently on the board. This f pawn will be hard-perhaps even unstoppable-for white. The other option for white would be to take the h pawn and try to queen its h pawn, but the f pawn will promote first. Perhaps there may still be a chance to draw for white but certainly black should not resign this position.
I like black’s position after:
1….Ke5!
2.Kxh4 Kf4!
Black’s pawn will promote faster and the black king could get to the queenside pawns faster too!
Any other white move just gives black another tempo. Such as
2.Kg4 Ke4 (or even h3 for black will win.)
If 2. b3 or b4 yields cxb3. With a black queen on the board in another two moves.
If 2.a4 then again Ke4 or h3 probably wins.
If 2.h3 then f5+ will likely win for black.
Susan,
Your puzzles are always entertaining and educational. Thanks for them.
One suggestion you may consider: Could you organize them somehow and have them in some separate place one can go to to find several, click on one and see the instructions and information for solving? Also, perhaps a few days after an initial posting, if you could attach the correct solution to the puzzle (separately, of course), it would be useful. It’s always good to know for sure if one found the correct solution or not, and if it was a real historical game how it actually went.
Thanks, G
Actually it’s not that clear to me.
So Ke5 2.Kxh4 Kf4 but then 3.Kh5 (white’s weapon is its h pawn !). I have to take some time to find out the right maneuvre. (Scoul, from france)
Hi Scoul,
I mentioned before that after Kh4 or Kh3 I would move the f pawn to f5. I haven’t made all the calculations but, again, white seems in trouble.
Cheers.
Renzo the point is that if 3…f5 then 4.a4 seems to win.
No actually I’m completely wrong sorry. So Black seems to win easily. Obviously we miss something (for this ending to be superbe)! Cheers. (searching ..)
It’s a forced Black win.
After Ke5, both sides Queen (Black first) Black forces the Queen exchange on h8 and eats up White’s Q-side pawns before White’s King can return
1..Ke5 2. Kh4 Kf4! 3. Kh5 f5
4. h4 Ke4! 5. Kg5 ..pawn push to Q
…. g1Q h8Q 101..Qf4 102.Kg6
Qf5 103. Kg7 Qe5 followed by Q exchange and Kd3 etc. eating up the pawns
susy hi gutten morgen,
i think Nein, with Ke5 and then face his opponent all the time until he losses his patience like D$%$”, and he wins, i think, otherwise if he goes after q´s pawns, he wont make it on time.
who will win this 7th match, more issue troubles, behind scenario, i thought so
so how are u this mnorning_
p.d. i wrote a blog to u sister, im glad shell be near u so that u wont be that lonely, i asked her why she moved from Israel, i said cause of middle east trouble, right or wrong, anyway thks always for everything.
do u think next year after all this mess, therell be a WCC and do u think the security conditions would be enough at Mexico city.
of course it will be like San Luis but inthat case anyone of ém could be accused of cheater like topalov was.
i gyess im thinking to ahead, lets focus o this loomatch, im a little dissapointed that topalov insists on smashing himself against that brick wall of Krannik he should try something different, b-g3 ??!!
