Among the World’s Oldest Chess Tournaments

Around two hundred participants from forty countries will compete at the chess tournament Reykjavik Open 2012 which is held at Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre. Never have so many participated in the event.

Among contestants is the female world champion, Hou Yifan from China, ruv.is reports. Fabiano Caruana, who currently ranks seventh in the world, despite being only 19 years old, will also compete. He is the highest-scoring contestant ever to attend the Reykjavik Open, Fréttablaðið reports.

Spectators will be able to observe the matches on a giant-screen and the grand masters Jóhann Hjartarson, Jón L. Árnason and Helgi Ólafsson will handle the commentaries. At the end of each round, the grand master Simon Williams will lead panel discussions.

The opening ceremony will be held today at 4 pm and the tournament will run for one week.
