Okay, I don’t have the full analysis, but what about Ra6 for a start? Threatening both a pawn and Ra8+.
Better answer now —
1.Rd7!
If QxR, then Qg8#
If Q moves off 7th rank, then Qxh7#.
If … Qg7, then Rd8+ Qg8, Qg6#.
Thoughts?
I like Qd2 protects the rook and has threats of Q d4 pinning the rook and the big one of winning the queen with rook d8+ moving the king up and then Rd7 getting the queen.
black is lost
I am going to be so embarrased if I am wrong here.
I look at the position again.
Qd2 Re2
QxR QxR
Qxc4
still down a pawn but a better position. there just must be something I am missing.
1. Rd8+ Qxd8 2. Qf6+ Kg8 3. Qxe5 attacking the e6 and a5 pawns.
I checked it out with the computer so I can not longer say anything.
Rd7 simply wins. if Black takes the R then Qf8#. If he moves the Q away then Qh7#
Hello all,
The only answer is:
1.Rd7!
It is now a forced loss for black.
Obviously the rook is untouchable as
1…Qxd7 loses to 2.Qf8#
The queen can not move anywhere without checkmate to follow next move or be captured with checkmate folllowing quickly thereafter.
1… Qg7 2. Qxg7#
1…Q anywhere on the 8th rank or Qd6 or Qc5 loses to
2. Qxh7#
1…Qf7 2. Rxf7
1…Qf6 or Qg5 loses to
2. Qxf6 or Qxf5
Thus after 1. Rd7!
the only remaining moves that delay the inevitable are “spite checks” with the rook.
1…Re2+
2. Kh1! (Kg1 would allow 2…Qc5+ and now white will be mated! 3. Kh1 Re1+ 4.Kg2 or Kh2 then Qg1#
if 3. Kf1 Qf2# if 3. Qe3 Qxe3+ and still the same problems for white.)
2…Re1
3. Kg2 Re2+
4. Kf1 and now black is out of moves except to first lose material and then the game.

there is an old chess saying:
“if you need to think about the use of tactics, your position might be worse!”
i don’t remember the author, but i’m sure to have met this sound bite recently, whilst drinkin’ some fine cup of coffee in the chesscafe … 🙂
1.rd7!! of course
greetings to all – and have a nice weekend,
yours Vohaul
Uhh… do you guys just refuse to see Rd7 exd7? Seems to me you guys just lose your rook and allow black another queen.
Never mind, I was looking at it the wrong way, of course:)
1. Rd7 is definitely the move. If Blk counters with Re2+, white’s moves must avoid the black squares or black moves Qc5+ and white is caught in a mating net!
Definitely starting with Rd7, due to the mate to the black king.
