Al Ain Chess Club Clinch Asian Club Championship Title

AL AIN – Al Ain Chess Club A team of UAE clinched the first Asian Club Chess championship title with 12 match points after the seventh and final round. Qi Yuan Club of China also scored 12 match points but on better technical counts, Al Ain A team won the championship and Qi Yuan were the runners up.

Fajr Shams Chess Club of Iran took the bronze with 11 match points. Hisham Al Taher the team captain of the Al Ain team said: “We dedicate this victory to UAE and are delighted with our performance. It was a team effort.”

Vietnam Victory Club held to a draw Al Ain A team in a keenly contested match. Grandmaster Li Chao of Al Ain had a quick win against CM Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam on the fourth board while GM Jobava Baadur of Al Ain lost to GM Nguyen Anh Dung of Vietnam on the third board. Other board games ended in draws. Qi Yuan Club defeated Tagaytay Chess Club of Philippines 2.5-1.5. Zhou Weiqi of China had an upset win over GM Paragua Mark of Philippines on the third board.

Zhou had extra pawn in a opposite colour bishop ending. Mark was under intense pressure every move and after 60 moves Zhou managed to advance his passed pawns and clinched the point and much needed victory for China.
