Dimakiling hopes to complete GM status in KL meet

INTERNATIONAL MASTER Oliver Dimakiling is gunning for his third and final GM norm in August following his successful conquest of the Engr. Blas Hipulan and Deep Blue Cafe Chess Open Tournament in SM City Cebu, over the weekend.

Dimakiling of Davao City, undefeated in the tough nine-round Swiss tournament, is hoping to finally nail the elusive title when he competes in the 10th Malaysian Chess Festival 2013 from Aug. 9 to 19 at the Cititel Mid Valley in Kuala, Lumpur, Malaysia.

“I hope to do well in the Malaysian Chess Festival 2013,” said Dimakiling who beat National Master Rustum Tolentino of Cagayan de Oro in the eighth round and Voltaire Sevillano of Cebu in the ninth to rule the Engr. Blas Hipulan event which is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). Dimakiling received P40,000 for his feat.

Dimakiling and IM Rolando Nolte failed to notch their GM titles during the DYTM Raja Dr Nazrin Shah Invitational KL Masters 2013 last June 13 to 21 at the Swiss Inn in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Meanwhile, organizers of the 10th Malaysian Chess Festival 2013 have lined up the following events for the Aug. 9 to 19 event where titles are at stake: 1) 10th IGB Dato Arthur Tan International Open Chess Championship 2013; 2) 4th KLK Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng International Seniors Open Chess Championship 2013; 3) 8th AmBank Malaysia Chess Challenge 2013 4) 33rd ASTRO Merdeka Rapid Open Team Chess Championship 2013; 5) 4th SWENSEN’S Open Rapid Age-Group Chess Championship 2013 and the usual Festival Blitz Open.
