Adegboyega, Olanrewaju Rule ‘Friends of Chess’ Tourney

National Master and veteran of many chess Olympiad, Adebayo Adegboyega, and emerging prodigy, Ajibola Olanrewaju, over the weekend , justified their complete mastery of the game of chess among their peers with an overwhelming victory at the Easter edition of monthly ‘Friends of Chess’ tournament.

Adegboyega, who was among the Nigerian quartet that won a category silver medal at the last Wold Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany, and Olanrewaju, ended up, as in the last edition of the event in March, in joint top position with seven points each. Their points were amassed from eight games in the rapid tournament, which was held at the National Stadium, Lagos.

A total of 65 players participated in the two-day event. There were eight female, 22 masters and 34 open players. Among the more notable of the participants were last month’s champion, Bunmi Olape. Others were Charles Campbell, Fola Akintola, Femi Fasheyitan, Rotimi Dashaolu and Bayo Babalola.

Adegboyega, had a brilliant start in the tournament, brushing aside the main opposition of Babalola, whom he had a narrow win over in Round Three. In the match, Adegboyega played white against Babalola on the top board. By the end game, most pundits believed his opponent was in a wining position, but it failed to end thus as Babalola failed to utilised his slight edge.
