Next time GM Wesley So if your planning to DRAW your last game as a draw will assure you of winning the tournament DO NOT announce it during interview days before your last match, it does not sit well with chess fans. The better way to do it is not to give any indication that you are merely going for a draw, otherwise it wil make you appear as if your only after of the price money. It would have been better if you tried everything first with draw as a last option. You still have more hours to play but you did not wanted to win just a draw. Carlsen always says show no mercy to your opponents be ruthless to them when you play as that is the way elite players play. You have a soft heart and always take pity to your opponent, you wont be a top 5 or a world contender with that attitude. Be ruthless and show no mercy in chess games but you can be kind-hearted, pitifull & generous outside of chess. Thats the way ELITE players think and I belive you can be with the right attitude in every game match. Look at Carlsen, Caruana & Nakamura they always fight to win with draw as last option and they never speak in interview that they plan to draw their match ahead of actual game. You could have surpass more your goal of 2,750 and a 2,760 was within reach… but you did not try at all and was contended with a draw against Brunello days before your match even started. Chess fans were hoping you fight for a win but guesd you already made up your mind just to draw to win days before you play Brunello. Be that as it may, CONGRATULATIONS for winning the ACP Golden Classic 2014, Category 17 tournament. We wil miss you playing in international tournaments, please dont take a long lay-off and Thank You & Coach Susan Polgar.
In his interview after winning his match against Jobava (see http://www.acpgoldenclassic.com) GM Wesley So to this effect: He did not know the intention of Sabino. The organizer it appears are watching and they want a fighting match (against Sabino Brunello). He just wanted to finish the tournament and he would be happy with a DRAW against Sabino. He said this 2 days before his last round match against GM Sabino Brunello.
GM Wesley So did said in an interview after his victory against Jobava that “He would be happy with a draw against Sabino Brunello”. This he said 2 days before his match against Sabino. See BELOW titled ” Interview with Webster U GM Wesley So after his victor over Jobava” for full details of the interview.
CONGRATs GM Wesley So for winning the ACP Golden Classic 2014 with a performance rating of 2,844. Now with live elo rating of 2,755 & unofficially ranked # 12.
CONGRAT Wesley So and Coach Susan Polgar. Excellent Job with GM So now with a 2,755 elo and ranked number 12 in the live rating. (Can climb as number 11 if Kramnik will lose his remaining 3 matches in Dortmund) And oh, Coach Susan tell GM So to be very careful in whatever words he utter during interviews especially saying he would be happy with a draw days before his match begin, its not good PR wise. Less talk, less mistake. Just be careful of the words since a lot of people are following GM Wesley So progress to the elite level. Again, Congrats GM Wesley So you deserved to win the ACP Golden Classic 2014, Category 17 with a 2844 performance rating. Excellent followup with your earlier victor in the 2014 Capablanca Memorial in Cuba last May 2014, a Category 19. You should participate in these kind or similar tournaments more (at least Category 17 tourney) Great Coaching Susan Polgar, it appears GM So is making the right moves everytime he plays ala stockfish moves 🙂 Next time, play with more fire. As what Carlsen said ” Don’t give much respect to your opponent. Be ruthless and show no mercy and always play for a win during a chess match.” Don’t bring your soft-heart/kind hearted or pitiful attitude in a chess match as it has no place in it. Bring it only outise of chess but never during a match. THANKS and Hope you wont lay-off from high level chess competitions that long. Your fans will be waiting for your next tournament.
The reason Wesley will be on a long layover is because he can’t play in FIDE events until President Pichay signs the letter to allow him to change. If you want to see his games you got to support him in the changing federation process. Otherwise he is forced to sit.
Marami pa kayong dakdak, mga galamay ni pechay puro kayo vegetative state ang mga utak! A golden congratulations Wesley, always be true to your self! Inggit lang ang mga yan, mediocre minds!
Its NOT being mediocre mind or inngit, its FAIR ADVISE from a true Wesley So fans. BOBO mo talaga palihabsa illterate ka sampu ng pamilya mo BUGOK utak mo. Magsama kayo ng amo mo si Pichay, BOBO!
The above comments are constructive criticism and/or good advise its not destructive and whoever wrote it has a valid point. Only people with small minds the size of ant will react negatively with those comments. If you read between the lines, its a good advise or fair observation to GM Wesley So which he needs to avoid and/or change to further improve and be elite level player. Look it in a positive way. Its different from destructive criticism lodge by NCFP people as the one who wrote it appears to be a true Wesley So fans and not NCFP guys. CONGRAT’s GM Wesley So for winning the ACP Golden Classic 2014. Congrats & Thank You Susan Polgar, excellent coaching – truly a world class trainer/coach and deserving recepient of FIDE Trainer of the Year for 2014. Keep up the great work both of you & GOD BLESS.
first of Congrats to you Wes!a very fine performance of you.but honestly i felt sad that you give a hint of your intention to your next opponent that is i belive is really bad as far as fighting attitude is concerned.in fact even if you lose your last game you will still be a co champion so why dont take the risk to play for a win againts a lowly rated player?i could understand if you are going to play againts player similar to your playing strenght but hes not.offering a draw againts eljanov in iceland is somehow a bit understandable becoz at least hes a high rated player.we always support you here in the phils in everything u decide on thats ur life at the end of the day..but pls dont tell us that the reason why you wanted to change federation is becoz of better exposure and a chance of playing quality opponents.Gosh thats not true u are now the 2nd highest player in the u.s. probably in europe yes.nevertheless we will continue to support you no matter what.but pls be a fighting chessplayer show no mercy on the board..give fans a run for their money..do not develop a sense of complacency in your games the softness in ur heart will radiate thru the eyes of your opponents..again Congratulation,Goodluck to all your undertakings..Be a Man!
There’s nothing wrong with that statement “I will be happy with a draw”. Mediocre mind w/ an elo rating of 500 would interpret that as “playing for a draw”. The connotations are pole apart. Pls stop your crab mentality.
congrats GM wes. you know sometimes you must be (sigurista) a sure win. a draw is a draw to win. no more no less. use your brain at times when it feels right. I will watch your games gm wes no matter what federation are you in. pinoy tayo!!!!!

I see a difference between playing for a draw with black and settling for a draw with white.
Perhaps he shouldn’t have announced it (did he?). But it certainly wouldn’t have been unexpected.
