Joshua Colas was born September 5, 1998 at St. Agnes Hospital in White Plains, New York.He is the middle child of Guy and Yanick Colas who were both born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Joshua has an older brother named Korey and a younger sister named Chellsie. Joshua is a student at White Plains Middle School. Joshua enjoys playing video games, basketball and the keyboards. He also enjoys playing cello in the school orchestra. His favorite subjects are math and social studies. His goal is to become a grandmaster before he graduates from high school. Joshua is interested in studying accounting in college. Joshua wishes to thank his family, his friends, his pastor, his coaches, and everyone who has supported him along the way.
The Joshua Colas Chess Fund was established in June 2010 in an effort to support the chess pursuits of White Plains resident Joshua Colas. In his brief chess career, Joshua has won four national championships and has been named to the All-American Scholastic Chess Team for the past three years. He participated for Team USA at the 2010 World Youth Championships in Greece and at the 2011 World Youth Championships in Brazil.
In 2009, as a sixth grader at White Plains Middle School, Joshua won the National High School Speed Chess Championships in Chicago. In 2010, Joshua would go on to win the coveted New York City Scholastic Chess Championships in Manhattan. Later that year, he would be crowned the 7th Grade National Chess Champion in Orlando, Florida.
On December 16, 2010, Joshua Colas earned the title of Chess Master making him the youngest black Chess Master in history!

On March 10, 2012, Joshua Colas was awarded the title of Life Master by the United States Chess Federation.

The Joshua Colas Chess Fund provides financial support for all of Joshua’s chess-related activities including tournament expenses, travel, lodging, meals, and weekly Grandmaster training sessions.
The Fund, and this website, are maintained by Ray Ainsworth (914-949-0692) who is a volunteer Chess Coordinator in the White Plains Public School system. Please note that donations are tax-deductible and are processed through The Foundation for Public Education in White Plains, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Most importantly, 100% of all donations go towards the chess expenses of Joshua Colas.
