  Bd7! wins- either stalemate is avoided if king takes bishop- or white wins by mate threat Bb5 if black queens.

  The trapped black king allows stalemate but unfortunately for black also mate threat.

  Gorgeous and justly famous.

  Réti’s composition was actually:

  8/3k4/1K6/8/4BR2/4p3/4p3/8 w – – 0 1

  … from which only 1.Bf5+! wins (1.Bc6+ draws). Black’s best shot is:

  1…Kd6
  2.Rd4+ Ke7
  3.Re4+ Kd8!

  … and this is where we came in.
