Jenny Fierro loved to play chess. She started when she was little, just about 5 or 6 years old and played until the end, said her mother, Maria Elena Fierro.

“She loved anything that had to do with sports, keeping her mind busy, strategizing,” Fierro said. “It was a passion of hers, to play chess.”

It is also one of the things friends, family and fellow chess lovers remembered about the girl at a memorial tournament Saturday.

Jenny Fierro died in May at age 17 after being hit by a car. On Saturday her memory was honored at the Chess Tournament for Jenny Fierro at the county services building on Dogwood Road, hosted by the Heber chess team.

“It’s a way to memorialize her and recognize her and say, ‘We remember you Jenny,’” said Tony Lambert, chess team adviser.

Jenny had been on the team when she went to Heber Elementary School, Lambert said. He remembers when she and her fellow students practically lived in his garage, training for the 2004 national championship, which they won.

“For me, she was a very special little girl,” Lambert said.

Others also felt she was special.

“She was really something,” said Andrew Martinez.

The 17-year-old remembers playing and losing chess against Jenny, he said. She was really good.
