The youngest chess grandmaster in history to change Ukrainian citizenship to Russian
Today, 03:16 PM
The youngest Grand Master in chess history, 19 year-old Ukrainian Sergey Karyakin, wants to change his citizenship to Russian, Russian website NewsRu.com reports.
“That was Karyakin’s decision. The reason is simple. Sergey wants to win a World Cup. Russian conditions are more conducive to reaching this aim,” Sergey Karyakin’s father Alexander said.
“We don’t want to say bad things about the Ukrainian side, but let’s take as an example the players of Dynamo Kyiv soccer club. They have a stadium, managers, coaches, a sports base – they have everything. Ukrainian chess players don’t have anything like that,” he added.
The World Chess Federation’s (FIDE) rules allow Grand Masters to play for another country’s chess federation. However, Sergey Karyakin wants to become a legal citizen of Russia. He has filled an application for Russian citizenship and is renting an apartment in Moscow.
According to Russian newspapers, Karyakin will be training under the direction of former Garry Kasparov coach Yuri Dokhoyan.
Kasparov named Karyakin his main successor after retiring from professional chess.
Karyakin was a chess prodigy and holds the record for the youngest grandmaster in history, achieving the title at the age of twelve years and seven months. In the January 2009 FIDE rating list he is ranked 27th in the world, third in Ukraine, and the second junior (under 20) in the world.

Karjakin and Carlsen will rule chess for the next 20 years.
Kasparov doesn’t believe in Karjakin. He has predicted Carlsen to be the dominating player in the year to come.
Karjakin is a very good player, but it is clear 100% that Carlsen is the more talented of them. Carlsen is the future of chess!
Karjakin = Political tool of Putin, who will also rule for the next 20 years.
I think Kasparov spoke too hastily (not the first time!). Carlsen should get to the World Championship before him.
Oooops! That is maybe a big possibility but everybody just forget Mr. Wesley So from the Philippines.
If Wesley will have the support like Carlsen and Karjakin, he is really a force to reckon with because he is a natural talent.
Hope some sponsors will start looking at Wesley So.
Talent is important but means little without the hard work and I’m sure that Karjakin is working harder then Carlsen.
Capablanca was the greatest talent and still lost to Alekhine, everything is possible.
The person who translated this, clearly has no no clue about chess.
“The reason is simple. Sergey wants to win a World Cup.”
LOL. This is no football, dummy translator. it’s chess. He wants to win the World Championship. There is a HUGE HUGE difference between winning the World Championship and winning a World Cup.
Anonymous 2:06 pm (above) is an idiot. He comes on here to call someone a dummy while he is dummy himself.
The truth is THERE IS A CHESS WORLD CUP! Go read your facts well.
Did I say anywhere that there is no World cup in chess??? I even said that there is a huge difference between winning the World Championship and winning a World cup.
So who is the dummy, dummy?
