Anand inpsires Ganguly to beat Kostenko

NEW DELHI: Inspired by world champion Viswanathan Anand’s presence, national champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly beat overnight leader Kazakh grandmaster Petr Kostenko in the eighth round of seventh Parsvnath International Open Chess Tournament on Saturday.

With only two round remaining in the biggest open event of the country, Ganguly, Kostenko and Russian Grandmaster Mikhail Ulibin now share the lead on seven points each while as many as 12 players including Abhijit Kunte and Dibeyandu Barua are in proximity of the leaders with 6.5 points apiece.

Ganguly beat Kostenko from the white side of Sicilian Defence after 70 moves while grandmaster Ulibin defeated International Master Roktim Bandopadhyay in Kings Indian Defence to catch up with the leaders. Former national champion Abhijit Kunte split the point with P Karthikeyan, while Dibeyandu Barua signed peace with IM norm hopeful Shashikant Kutwal.

GM norm hopeful International Master SP Sethuraman drew his game against statemate and International Master RR Laxman. Local favourite Parimarjan Negi got another setback to his title contention after drawing against International Master K Rathanakaran.
