Down a long hallway with subdued lighting, young competitors from across the state faced off in the Missouri State Chess Championship Saturday, Feb. 7, at Liberty High School.
There were five planned rounds with 30-minute time limits on each game.
Those who prevailed are now eligible to compete in the national championships, which will be held later this year in Tennessee.
The event was expected to draw close to 60 competitors in four divisions, which included high school, middle school, elementary and elementary K-3.
Organizers said it was the first year the championship was held at Liberty High School.
The Kansas City Scholastic Chess Association sponsored the event.
