Six Chess Grandmasters Battle to Win Title of 1st Jersey Masters Chess Champion

Islanders will be able to witness the skill of six Grandmasters of Chess who are due to descend on Jersey for the first ever Jersey International Masters Chess Tournament this week (Wednesday 6 March to Sunday 10 March 2013).
The world-renowned chess experts will be competing for the title of ‘Jersey Masters Chess Champion’ at the event which is being hosted at The Hotel Ambassadeur in St Clement.
The Tournament, co-sponsored by leading law firm, Appleby and Jersey Tourism, is heralded to be the strongest chess tournament ever held in the Channel Islands. It will attract more than 60 participants, including 15 additional titled players, from around the world. This includes Polish ‘Super Grandmaster’, Michał Krasenkow – who has previously been rated in the top ten chess players worldwide.
Tito Kahn, President of the Jersey Chess Club said: “This tournament will really put Jersey on the world map for chess. Thanks to the support we have had from Appleby over the last year, we have come a long way in raising the profile of the sport, and encouraging Jersey people young and old to play and compete. This is a culmination of a lot of hard work, and we hope that the Tournament will continue to become a firm and long-standing event on the Jersey sporting calendar.”
David Benest, Appleby’s Jersey Office Managing Partner added: “Supporting this event is very much part of our commitment to the Jersey Chess Club, particularly the juniors, and we are thrilled that we have helped to get such a high profile event off the ground. It will not only help raise the profile of chess throughout the Island and hopefully encourage people to get playing chess, it will also help to put Jersey on the world map as a key centre of excellence for the sport. It is fantastic to see such a calibre of entrants competing in this international tournament and we wish everyone the best of luck, especially our young Appleby Junior Academy players.”
Competitors visiting Jersey for the Tournament come from 14 different countries, including Bangladesh, The Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine, Scotland, Wales and England, as well as top ranked Jersey players and top young players from The Appleby Junior Chess Academy.
Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, P.J.D. Ryan, will officially open the tournament as a Chief Guest on Wednesday 6 March.
