The 5th Chennai International Open Chess Tournament will take place from 15th to 23rd January at the Jawaharlal Nehru Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Chennai.

The tournament is organized by the Sports Promotion Foundation, Chennai, under the guidance of Tamilnadu State Chess Association & All India Chess Federation.

The tournament will be conducted as per FIDE Laws of Chess and FIDE Swiss System with 11 rounds. Subjected to FIDE approval, Accelerated pairing will be employed for first two rounds of the event to increase norm chances of players.

Last year winner was Yu Ruiyuan, untitled player from China.

All participants will be provided free accommodation (other than Tamilnadu players). The accompanying persons will have to bear their own expenses. 

AICF registration fee for 2012-13 is compulsory for all Indian participants. The registration fee of Rs. 250/- will be accepted at the venue for the convenience of the players.

Total Cash Prizes: Rs. 10,10,000/- (approx 14.900 EUR). There wll be 35 regular prizes, with 3000 EUR reserved for the winner.

Please note that a Tax @ 20% ( as per Indian income tax regulations ) will be deducted from the prize money to be awarded to Foreign Players.

New Delhi Open and Chennai Open are the twin tournaments taking place from 5th to 23rd January in India. The organizers are offering special conditions for Grandmasters who agree to participate in both events:

1. GMs above 2650 – 800 USD plus full board + air ticket-Delhi-Chennai
2. GMs above 2600 – 700 USD plus full board + air ticket- Delhi-Chennai
3. GMs above 2550 – 600 USD plus full board + air ticket-Delhi-Chennai
4. GMs above 2500 – 500 USD plus full board + air ticket -Delhi-Chennai
5. GMs above 2400 – 400 USD plus full board + air ticket-Delhi-Chennai
6. GMs above 2300 – 300 USD plus full board + air ticket-Delhi-Chennai
7. WGM above 2400 – 150 USD plus full board + air ticket-Delhi-Chennai

Please note that the organisation does not guarantee above conditions unless reconfirmed from our side after your participation request. You have to book your tickets arrival at Delhi and departure from Chennai.

The above conditions are combined for both the tournaments. For above conditions, the Grandmasters have to agree to take part in both the tournaments.
