ST. LOUIS • Chess players with St. Louis connections won a gold medal at the World Chess Olympiad, the first for the United States in 40 years.

St. Louis resident Grandmaster Fabio Caruana, former St. Louis resident and past U.S. Chess champion Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura, former Webster University student and Sinquefield Cup champion Grandmaster Wesley So and current Webster University student Grandmaster Ray Robson are four of five U.S. team members who won the highest medal at the competition held in Baku, Azerbaijan, this month. Team member Sam Shankland participated in the U.S. Chess Championships held in St. Louis in April.

The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis, founded by Rex Sinquefield, hosts several national chess competitions throughout the year. St. Louis was named the national chess capital via a United States Senate resolution in 2014.
