PSC int’l chess stakes $30,000

Manila, Philippines – Grandmaster Oliver Barbosa will spearhead the local campaign in the Philippine Sports Commission Cup International Chess Championship set Jan. 14-20 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.

Barbosa is the country’s lone representative to the World Chess Cup set late this year in Tromso, Norway.

Also expected to compete in the $30,000 tournament are GMs Eugene Torre, Joey Antonio, Mark Paragua, John Paul Gomez, Darwin Laylo and Richard Bitoon.

GM Tahir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan and GM Cao Sang of Vietnam head the foreign bidders.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., secretary-general Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino Jr., executive director GM Jayson Gonzales, Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Javier Colmenares, PSC Chairman Ricardo Garcia and POC president Peping Cojuangco Jr. will grace the opening ceremonies at 2 p.m. (Clyde Mariano)
