Kramnik might move from second to fifth in the July list without playing any games- if Ivanchuk wins- as Moro will be ahead on number of games! Isn’t that crazy!? To drop from 2 to 5 with the same rating 3 months apart?
Meanwhile Topalov will have a higher rating than world number 3 in April, but will only be number 6 in July. Topalov went up 10 rating points yet dropped from 4th to 6th- how crazy is that?
I’ve heard this tournament doesn’t count for the july ratings… it will be on the october list.
By the way these ratings are very quick to calculate. You just multiply by 10 the difference of actual score to expected score, in each individual game.
Well, tbischel , that is unknown- Linares was counted even later past deadline- so this might too considering the top level players in it.
In fact Anand was due to become world number 1 above Topalov- but FIDE did not include Linares as they shouldn’t according to their rules- there was a great uproar about it and FIDE realised that they should always include major events even past the deadline.
The rating list is funny, getting more and more inflated. Good that Kramnik is being pushed down the list though. After all, he is hardly ever playing. True, he will compete against Anand later this year but even the world number one decided to play Morelia / Linares. Similar with Leko, nothing but Rapid and Blindfold games. It’s a pity.
Can someone please explain, how is it possible, that the ratings get inflated, but the rating of the no 1 player is still below 2800? If there is a massive inflation, shouldn’t Anand be 2850 or something? Anand and Kramnik have practically constantly had a similar rating (+Shirov, Leko and Svidler are still around 2750 as ususal).
You don’t judge the inflation by the one top player- who could just vary a lot on his own- but collectively the top x players.
Maybe x could be 10 or 20?
eg when Kasparov broke 2800 in January 1990, tenth place was rated 2625, but when Anand broke 2800 in 2006 (and he was merely second place below Topalov as it happens!), tenth place was rated 2727. In 16 years tenth place was now over 100 points higher!
In this perspective the Kasparov of 1990 would have broken 2900 in 2006. That is Kasparov of 1990 was much more dominant than the top players who reach 2800 today.
Karpov was the only other player above 2680 in 1990.
Today there are 24 players over 2680.
So 2800 means much less than it used to.
