PUNE: World Championship Challenger Magnus Carlsen, who will clash with Viswanathan Anand for the title in November this year, won a strong Super GM Sinquefield Cup chess meet in Saint Louis (USA) last week with a phenomenally strong performance.

World No. 1 Carlsen’s performance in the tournament was rated at an awesome level of 2966, way above his highest-ever Elo rating of 2862. This would surely make Anand sit up and take notice. In the double round-robin league over six games, Carlsen tallied 4.5 points to American Hikaru Nakamura’s 3.5.

Levon Aronian of Armenia was third at 2.5 and former World Championship Challenger Gata Kamsky last at 1.5 points. He had two wins over Kamsky, two draws against Nakamura and a win and a draw against Aronian. According to the webcast, Carlsen was in an inferior position against Aronian in the sixth round but he capitalised on his opponent’s error.
