On the occasion of the 2006 Football World Cup in Germany, the organizing committee of the 2008 Chess Olympiad will hold a Women’s Chess Cup in Dresden (Germany) from July 6th – 9th, 2006.
One player in each of the qualified World Cup countries will be invited. The players are divided according to the World Cup preliminary groups. The first two players from each group will qualify for the Knockout Championship.
If a country cannot send a player, that slot will be filled by one German player. This is actually quite exciting since the event will end on the same day as the Football World Cup. Soccer and Chess!
Should I represent the United States?
Can the US team win the World Cup?
If not, how far will they go?
Which country will be the favorite to win the 2006 Football World Cup?
Yes, you should play.
The US team will not win the WC but they will make the final 8.
Brasil will win.
Susan, since Hungary is not in the World Cup, 🙁
you would have no conflict at all. Thanks for posting the Hungarian results below, I put that photo of the Hungarian flag on my pc display as the background over the entire screen.
I just hope there are no conflicts with USCF! You are the obvious choice in chess skill and chess promotion for this event.
Hopefully it becomes a fixture at all future soccer world cups.
The US has a great chance to do at lest as well as the baseball players have done in the Baseball”World Cup” going on now.
That would have been very hard to believe 20 or 30 years ago. soccer has come very far in this country.
CHESS IS NEXT!!!
You should play by exposing your promotion and emphasizing young girls and women.
The US soccer team will not win the FIFA World Cup, but they are the most improvement team.
Brazil will win with no doubt.
Yes you should play!
The US will finish 2nd in division to the Czechs. Italy will lose games because they will only play defense after they score one goal.
I think the Czechs will go on win it. I just don’t want to see Brazil win again.
what a luck! hungaria is not qualified for Football Championship, despite our famous Lothar Matthaeus did his very best to revitalize Puskaz (wrong written – for sure) and the famous 1954 team.
(… by the way: never say “soccer” – stayin’ in europe watchin’ football – don’t even think about this nice little smelly word … – it might be dangerous for your health – ^^)
to answer your question – yes – you should represent the US – and you might meet our darling Elisabeth – i know her father – and he is a very good chess coach …
now then, i unveiled myself as a german (provided that my awful english hasn’t unveiled me formerly in this blog). but, surprisingly i’m a german patriot (not that us – defense rocket, of course … ^^)- a factor that might slightly influence my candor and therefore my following predictions (^^):
1. Chess Champion Mistress: Elisabeth Paehtz
2. FIFA WORLD FOOTBALL CHAMPION:
and the winner is –
Germany
sincerly, Vohaul (with a twinkle ^^)
Lucky for you Vohaul
Now Germany doesn’t have to pull the same nastiness they used to steal Puskas’ legs and Hungary’s world cup.
Brazil must be considered the favorite team to win yet another WC. Since Germany is the host country, and a strong team, and since history shows home cooking comes thru, the 2nd favorite. No nation with a population of under 25 million will win it. Probably safe to say no nation under 50 million will take it, with Argentina an exception.
US: If history is an indicator, the US will have a difficult time against Italy and the Czech Republic. As I see it, the US must defeat Ghana, since I think both Italy and the Czech Rep will also, and then they must pick up one more win, easier said than done.
