Opening Ceremony in Doha
One of the biggest sport events of the World, 15th Asian Games are about to commence soon in the capital of Qatar – Doha. The Asian Games, which will take place 1-15 December 2006 include about 40 sports and more than 45 disciplines. Among Archery and Athletics, Golf and Wushu, Wrestling and Rugby, there will be chess competitions: Rapid Individual and Team events.
22 Asian Federations have confirmed their participation. Among many chess players, the Ex-World Chess Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan, Indian and Chinese chess stars Krishnan Sashikiran and Bu Xiangzhi, Irani best player Ghaem Maghami Ehsan, Qatari Chess Champion Mohammed Al Moddiakhi are participating. Zhu Chen of Qatar, Ex Women’s World Champion, is leading the women’s section of the Games.

Just curious. Wonder how they decided which of the former USSR republics belonged to Asia and which to Europe. Anyway, Kasim is the likely winner. Sasi is the dark horse.
Absolutely pitiful that the Philippines isn’t even on that list. Time was when we were teaching other Asian countries like India how to play this game. Now we’ve just fallen by the wayside.
