Vietnamese (young) star conquers World Youth Chess

Nhan Dan – An emerging Vietnamese chess star, Nguyen Anh Khoi, was convincing in his victory in the U-10 category of the 13-day 2012 World Youth Chess Championship, winning a perfect score of 11 after 11 rounds of play.
Khoi, seeded 13th in the U-10 division, confirmed his superiority by beating Andrey Asipenko from Russia in the last game yesterday, extending his winning streak at this year’s competition to 11 games out of 11.
This is Vietnam’s sixth world youth title in the history of the tournament, following Dao Thien Hai (U-16, 1993), Nguyen Thi Dung (U-12, 1994), Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (U-10, 2000), Le Quang Liem (U-14, 2005), and Tran Minh Thang (U-8, 2008).
Another Vietnamese hope, Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, missed the bronze medal in the girls’ U-18 division despite her 11th round match victory, ending up in fourth place with eight points in all.
The annual event, which took place in Maribor, Slovenia on November 7-19, featured 1,587 boys and girls from 91 countries and territories around the world, competing in five different age divisions ranging from U-8 to U-18.
