Tanraj Singh Sohal is Canadian Chess Champion
WSN Bureau
9 July, 2008
11 year old Tanraj Singh from Surrey has won the 2008 Canadian Chess Championship (for his age group) held in Edmonton, Alberta and it is the fourth time that he has won the trophy.
Tanraj Singh’s father, Dr. Paramjit Singh, himself a chess fan, introduced his son to the 64 squares at a tender age and the kid demonstrated exceptional talent in the school chess club.
Young Tanraj has earlier won the 2008 Fraser Valley Regional championship in Surrey and BC Provincial Chess Championship held in Burnaby.

Stupid reporter.
Tanraj Sohal has done it once again. The 11-year-old Grade 6 student from Surrey won the 2008 Canadian Chess Championship held in Edmonton, Alberta, on May 18-19 in his grade level. This is the fourth time Tanraj has won the Canadian Chess Championship trophy.
He won the sixth grade chamionship, hardly THE Canadian Championship!
Yea thats a little misleading…I’m canadian and I was a little surprised to see that an 11 year old won our championship! 😛
The Canadian Open Chess championship takes place in Montreal in two weeks time.
The Canadian Youth Chess Championship is next week in Quebec City.
The Canadian Closed (zonal) will next be held in 2009.
I am not aware of any other tournament that could be referred to as “Canadian Championship”.
Susan, when your blog repeats a false report like this, you should retract it, and also apologize.

responsible journalism
To scholastic people, winning the scholastic championship is the same as winning THE championship.
The reporter is from Seik comunity, this is a religious newspaper who reports about one of the kids in their community. Susan just copy the chess related news. Tnaraj is a great kid and a good chess player. His result (Canadian Champion for grade 7th – his 4th title) is more then a great achievement. GM Pascal Charboneau was also Canadian grade Champion for more then one time (I am not sure that he has more then 4 such titles) later he become also The Canadian Champion.
Anyway, will be better to congratulate Tanraj, then to make such a big fuss about a poor reporter from a small newspaper.
In other news,
Little Timothy Tidwell of Essex UK has won the first pre-natal chess competition. He played his fraternal twin for the title three weeks before his birth!
Many doubt his chances of becoming a GM as he has not met all of his GM norms before birth.
who did REALLY win the canadian championship?
there will be no canadian championship this year.
” ? said…
who did REALLY win the canadian championship?”
Dudley Doright!
King of the Mounties!
The current Canadian Champion is IM Nikolai Noritsyn, who won the 2007 Canadian Closed Championship.
The Canadian OPEN Championship, with Shirov, Adams, Ni Hua, etc, starts on July 11, 2009 in Edmonton
