A TOTAL of 10 players have been confirmed for the Fiji Chess Federation 2011 National Championship which will be held at the the Fiji School of Medicine’s Pasifika Campus on December 2 to 6 in Suva.

The annual tournament is a World Chess Federation (FIDE) rated tournament as players will be able to increase their international rankings. FCF president Dr Virgilio de Asa said the tournament would also be used to select a national team to compete at the Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey next year.

“We want to select a six member Mens squad and a six member Womens squad after the tournament,” de Asa said.

“However, the Womens squad will be reduced to four early next year,” he said.

The 10 players for the Mens tournament include defending champion chess master (CM) Manoj Kumar, CM Calvin Prasad, veteran Dr Neel Arora, USP Student Rajiv Raj, Under-20 Champion Ronald Terubea, Goru Arvind, Australia-based Dr Sanmogam Goundar, New Zealand-based Asheesh Gautam and Noel Adricula. June Adricula is the confirmed invitational player.

“These players qualified through being the top two players in monthly events during the year.”

“This tournament carries a lot of weight as we need to select the best players for the national team.” De Asa said the Womens National Championship, which will be a five round Swiss tournament, will be held on Saturday.

“This will see close to a dozen females compete and Gloria Sukhu and Hilda Vukikomoala are the favourites to win.”
